LGBTs 'suffer more today than under Saddam Hussein'

Iraq is no place to be if you’re gay or lesbian, film-maker David Grey reveals in his new documentary.

This updated sequel to 2007's Queer Fear: Gay Life, Gay Death in Iraq exposes the truth about the murders of gays and lesbians by militias linked to the Iraqi government. Human Rights campaigner Peter Tatchell who has seen the film said, 'Watch and weep. A truly poignant and moving revelation about the terrorisation and murder of Iraqi lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people."

Since this film was made, the killings have continued and, many say, got worse. For gay Iraqis there is little evidence of the transition to democracy. They don't experience any new-found respect human rights. Life for them is even worse than under the tyrant Saddam Hussein.

It is a death sentence in today's "liberated" Iraq to love a person of the same-sex, or for a woman to have sex outside of marriage, or for a Muslim to give up his / her faith or embrace another religion.

Grey’s 9 minute documentary will be shown as part of the Village Film Annual Screening 2008, and Ali Hili from Iraqi LGBT will also be speaking about the persecution of the LGBT people in Iraq by the new fundamental Iraqi regime.

The evening includes several short films and documentaries featuring human rights, mental health and education.
