Stonewall has announced the nominations for its annual Awards ceremony, a number of whom are prominent lesbians

The retail guru and Queen of Shops host, Mary Portas and Sue Perkins, who
won the TV competition, Maestro have been nominated for the ‘Entertainer of
the Year’ award.

In the “Journalist of the Year” category, agony aunt to Daily Mirror
readers, Miriam Stoppard appears along with Julie Bindel who writes for The Guardian.

Chosen by Stonewall supporters for the ‘Hero of the Year’ category is
same-sex family rights activist and DIVA contributor, Nathalie Gamble and the writer and director of The L Word, Rose Troche.

Amongst the male faces in the run for an award is The London Paper’s “Gay
Man About Town” columnist, Joshua Hunt. Pop singer, Sam Sparro and
politicians, Lord Alli and Lord Carlile also appear.

Stonewall Chied Executive, Ben Summerskill said of the increasing variety of
the nominees from year to year, “This reflects an increasingly gay-friendly
modern Britain, where equality is being built into the everyday lives of
millions of people”

While the inspirational individuals are recognised, the bigots and
homophobes are not forgotten. Vying for the “Bigot of the Year’ award
amongst five others is Unionist MP, Iris Robinson who is notorious for
claiming that homosexuality is a worse act than paedophilia.

The awards ceremony will take place at the V&A, London on the 6th November at 7pm. Tickets start at £125, contact michaela.greene@stonewall.org.uk/ 020
